Between our festival appearances, Mostly Robot also literally sat down with the kind and innovative folks at CDR Berlin.  We did some “acoustic” versions of our tunes, spoke about our band formation and workflow, and gave motivational nuggets of silliness.  Check it out:

2010 Top 10 // Sandwich Toppings, Big

F what you heard, unless what you heard was that 2010 was the year of the sandwich topping. If that was what you heard, then my apologies to what you heard, and would you please tell what you heard that it looks very attractive today.

Here are my favorite sandwich toppings from 2010. Traditional sandwich additions like cheese don’t count. Although, quick story. This is a question I often ask my DJ classes as an ice breaker: what’s your favorite sandwich topping? Once, one guy, answered “Steak.”

“Wait a second, are you telling me that you get a sandwich with meat already inside, and then on top of what you already have in there, you put a whole steak?” I inquired.

“That’s right” he retorted, with a look of confusion on his face as to why there was a look of confusion on my face.

More power to you, brudda.  Here are my fav sandwich toppings from 2010.

  1. Jalepeños
  2. Avocado
  3. Deli Mustard
  4. Shiftee’s Secret Sauce (hot sauce + marinara sauce + mustard), now I must kill you.
  5. Russian Dressing + Sauerkraut (i.e. Reuben Combo garnish)
  6. Hot Sauce
  7. Pickles
  8. Cranberry Sauce
  9. Kiri
  10. Pear

Honorable mentions: chocolate (w/ Camembert), sweet peppers, mayo, chipotle mayo, walnuts, cream cheese, another sandwich, honey + butter, potato chips, salsa, apple, gravy, and a dash of brandy.

My First Trip to Fat Beats

Hip Hop mecca Fat Beats is sadly closing its doors after this week.  Fat Beats has always been one of my favorite places in the world.  Read about my first trip to Fat Beats on the Dubspot blog HERE.  I was 14 years old at the time (the gun show below is free of charge):

In honor of its final week, Fat Beats NY is having a ridiculous line-up of in-store performances:

p r a c t i c e -> p r a c t i c e -> practice -> PRACTICE

I wrote an article on practice habits for the Dubspot Blog.  Practice your reading by reading it HERE.

For a sense of my views concerning the vastly important issue of practice, consider the following quote and image from the article: “Quality can trump quantity, as the saying goes, and quality pastrami trumps all.”

July 23 – Midi Fight Club @ Tresor, Berlin

DJ Tech Tools Party

I’m playing the DJ Tech Tools party @ Tresor in Berlin this Friday, July 23rd.  Oh joy!

However, DJing aside, let’s focus on the important issue here.  Which Midi controller is best in an actual fight?  The NS7? Too cumbersome.  A quick opponent could easily dodge the attacks.  The NS7 would be a good finishing tool however.  Once, you have your opponent down on the ground, haduken, NS7 to the jaw.

What about those Korg Nano controllers?  Clearly too flimsy in a fight.  That’d be like bringing a knife to a gun fight, or a banana to a knife fight, or pudding to a banana fight.

Akai keyboards?  Now we’re talking.  Not as heavy as the NS7, but still can pack a punch.  If you saw someone coming at you with an Akai keyboard, you’d probably run away in tears.  I, on the other hand, would counter with the following:

Kontrol X1 nunchucks!  Simply take two KX1′s, connect them via usb and duct tape, and bada bing bada boom, you have yourself the ultimate Midi fighting weapon.  BONUS: make sure your usb cable is made of barbed wire.  DOUBLE BONUS: make sure you are a certified ninja.

Old Spice Done Changed The Game

This is probably old news to many of you, but Old Spice is killing it lately on the comedy tip.

Maybe you’ve seen their advertisements on television, such as

Certainly lots of humorous original material here. But what is truly next level, and perhaps unprecedented on this scale, are the incredible personalized response from “The Old Spice Guy” himself to users on twitter. The sheer number of these videos is impressive, but the humor, which stays fresh and funny in every video, is what knocks off my socks.  Nonsensical jokes, character jokes, relationship jokes, etc.  It’s all there.

Here’s the link to all of them: http://www.youtube.com/user/OldSpice#grid/user/484F058C3EAF7FA6

The Alyssa Milano series if one of my favorites, especially the last 2 (he also does many non-celebs):YouTube Preview Image

Beyond laughs, the videos seem to represent some new ideas in internet marketing:

  1. Mass personalized marketing: We are inundated every day with spam from across the internet, all of which is entirely impersonal.  “Grow your peniseses 15 inches!  Get the best deals on canoe travel to Nebraska!” etc.  They might even have your name. “Sam, how would you like to have a giant penis on the waters of Nebraska?”  Really though, you are getting the same exact message as millions of other people.  The Old Spice videos are a rare instance of actual personal contact.  The Twitter user name and message are displayed exactly, and The Old Spice Guy’s hilarious response is precisely directed to this content.
  2. Breaking the 4th Wall: The characters in movies, tv shows, and commercials are usually seen to be untouchable entities totally removed from our reality.  The Old Spice Guy videos break the world-dividing barrier of the screen (and the barrier of real life and fiction).  We try to live in our fantasies all the time: going to amusement parks, playing video games, etc.  Here we have a fictional character actually reaching out to people in the real world.  And it doesn’t hurt that the jokes are really funny.

Unfortunately the video responses are done for now, but salute to Old Spice for done changing the game.YouTube Preview Image
