The Golden Years // Hot Chip Tutorial

Hopefully you’ve seen my love child of a video “DJ Shiftee: The Golden Years // Shiftee’s Excellent DMC Adventure.”  In addition to this time-traveling adventure through DMC history, I’ve released (via Dubspot) a knowledge-traveling brain adventure into the depths of my “Hot Chip” routine.  Check it out:

And here’s The Golden Years itself if you missed it the first time around:

“The Golden Years” // My DMC Tribute Video

Here it is: The Golden Years, my time-traveling journey through DMC history. This video is a tribute to all the incredible DJ Champions from DMC’s glorious past. I’ve spent countless hours over the years studying masters like Roc Raida, Q-bert, Craze, and A-Trak. My goal: to one day stand in their shoes.  Literally…

Shout out to the new 2010 DMC World Champion: DJ LigOne from France!

PRAISE FOR “THE GOLDEN YEARS”

“If you ever wondered why a few human beings become DMC World Champions, it’s because the creative side of their brains work differently than everyone else’s. Shiftee’s brain remains in a class of it’s own as he invites his World Champion forefathers to join him on stage to share his 2009 set without one of them so much as leaving their home!

This is up there with David’s human spin as one of the most memorable events in DMC history.”
Tony Prince, DMC Founder

“YOU ARE CRAZY!!!! THAT NEW ONE ISSSSS CRAZY!! HAHAHA …. IM STILL LAUGHING!!”
Craze, 1998/1999/2000 DMC World Champion

“Shiftee killed it, what an original idea. Brings back great memories. But also, the routine is ill! RIP Roc Raida.”
A-Trak, 1997 DMC World Champion

“I love originality, that’s why I love DJ Shiftee and this video.”
Q-Bert, 1992/1993/1994 DMC World Champion

“I haven’t been entertained like this in quite a while.  The styles, personalities, and energy are all there in great detail and accuracy!”
Cutmaster Swift, 1989 DMC World Champion

“A DMC World winning set as you have never seen one before! I laughed out loud, got goose bumps and smiled like a Cheshire cat throughout this INCREDIBLE video. “
Sally Mclintock, DMC World Events Manager

“WHOOOAAAA!!!! Shiftee just turned the game upside down again! This is truly a gift to the entire battle scene.”
DJ Solo, 2010 DMC USA Supremacy Champion

“John Carluccio is a genius and DJ Shiftee is one funny & brilliant DMC World Champion!”
Christie Z-Pabon, DMC USA/Tools of War

“Shiftee educates the YouTube generation on Turntablism while cementing his own legacy in superb fashion.”
DJ I-Dee, 2005 DMC USA Supremacy Champion

“It is a genius idea, but what’s dope about it is that Shiftee respects and loves his craft and this video proves it 100 percent!!!!!”
Boogie Blind, 2001 Vestax World Champion, X-Ecutioners

“The Golden Years” champion profile: Personal Favorites

As you may have noticed, every “Golden Years champion profile” has been of a DMC World Champion . . . except for Swamp. Why Swamp? Aside from the fact that he’s an incredible DJ, I think the reasons for the inclusion will become clear once you see the video ;).

Nevertheless, there have been soooooooooo (ten “o”‘s) many fantastic DMC World sets over the years that didn’t take the main title. Here are 3 of my biased personal favorites (in no particular order).

P-Trix (USA), 1999

Klever (USA), 2001

Klever (USA) – 2001 World DJ Championships

Alladin (USA), 1989

“The Golden Years” champion profile: KENTARO

Kentaro, the 2002 DMC World Champion out of Japan, is one of the dopest DMC champs out there. His winning set is a masterpiece, packed with originality, a plethora of intricate beat juggle patterns, next level loop/needle drop routines, and a massively impactful finale.

Check out this ridiculous routine from his 2001 DMC set:

One thing I love about Kentaro is he has kept turntablism at the forefront of his post-DMC career. His incredible, multi-turntable live sets are very much extended turntablist sets. For example:

He’s even jamming with traditional Japanese instruments:

“The Golden Years” champion profile: CRAZE

The Michael Jordan of DMC. He won the DMC World Finals 3 years in a row: 1998-2000, and captured the team title in 2000 and 2001. The Miami native can do it all: scratch, juggle, be funky, be technical, do body tricks, emit confidence and attitude, diss, and have fun. Many people look at his 1998 DMC US set as his best work in DMC:

Craze – 1998 DMC US Finals

However, my favorite Craze DMC set these days is his 2000 Worlds set. It has a certain maturity and cohesiveness that you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else.

DJ Craze (2000) – DMC – Champions Vol.2

Here he is beating folks down head to head style at the 1998 ITF World Finals:

And finally, check out what is probably my favorite DMC team set of all time:

Allies (Craze / A-Trak) (USA/Canada) (2000) – DMC World Team Champions 1999-2007

“The Golden Years” champion profile: A-TRAK

A-Trak is pretty much a household name at this point, and it all started with his rise as one of the best turntablists of all time. Easily one of my top 3 favorite battle DJs ever. Incredibly technical, incredibly innovative, and incredibly musical. His competition sets from 1999-2000 are truly some of the best battle routines made by man. Of course, however, the Canadian first captured international attention by taking the 1997 DMC World title at 15 years of age.

A Trak 1997 – DMC – Champions Vol.2 – winning set

Here are some of his routines from the subsequent years. Too many amazing joints to post them all!

“The Golden Years” champion profile: NOIZE

The 1996 DMC World Champion DJ Noize out of Denmark is (in my mind anyway) the undisputed king of word play. The way me makes records interact and speak to each other is incredible and entertaining. See for yourself!

Check out the reaction he gets at the New Music Seminar battle (1994 I think) against DJ 8-Ball. Noize goes 2nd.

“The Golden Years” champion profile: SWAMP

DJ Swamp isn’t a DMC World Champ (he got 2nd), but the 1996 USA Champion is still one of my favorite DMC champs of all time. The first punk/rock/goth/etc turntablist champion. I played an event with Swamp recently and he brought on stage (what I would call) a goth burlesque circus from space. I forget the exact story with his 1996 DMC win, but it goes something like Swamp drove 10 hours directly from his shift as a street sweeper to claim the victory. Check it out!

Here’s his worlds set. He’s famous for smashing his record and then trying to cut himself at the end of his routine! (embedding disabled, so just the link)

Finally, check out his showcase at the 2001 DMC US Finals.  He does an incredible multi-record skipless trick, but most notably he smashes a Pioneer CDJ after performing on it!

“The Golden Years” champion profile: ROC RAIDA

Grandmaster Roc Raida, RIP, was the ultimate battle champion. He exemplified everything a hip hop DJ should be, and his impact on the world of DJing and music has been astounding. Here’s his 1995 DMC World winning set. Beyond the routines (so many gems, but I love the ed og especially) and the body tricks (he was the master), what I love about this routine is Raida’s attitude and presence on stage. He was the first DMC champ to come out with a “F#$* all you, I am the champion!” Right from the start, “All you other DJs…Suck my dick!” And then watch him after he finishes. That’s what battle DJing is all about right there!

Roc Raida – USA -1995 World Champion – The History Of DMC World Champions

I also want to highlight this footage of Raida practicing his 1996 DMC World set. What always boggles my mind in thinking about his sets is that he practiced all those body tricks sooooooo many times. Every time he wanted to run through his set, it must have been like a full body work out. I personally get tired just running through my scratches so many times. I can only imagine what it would be like to break a beat down with one hand with a different body trick on each beat! Also note the record tosses to the bed.

REST IN PEACE.
